A bunch of new stuff!

I’ve been updatting Twitter a lot more lately than the blog, mainly because most updates don’t warrant a full posting. If you have a Twitter account you can follow forumwarz for more frequent updates. Actually, even if you don’t have Twitter you can just subscribe to the RSS feed there and you’ll get all our updates. Here’s some stuff you might have missed:

New Hardware

The site has been pretty laggy lately. We decided to finally do something about it and ordered 3 brand new servers, all of which are faster than our current server. They’re currently being set up by our hosting company and hopefully we’ll be able to switch over pretty soon.

There will be some downtime as we switch over. This is a pretty major change so it might take the larger part of a day to switch over, but it should be worth it for the performance we’ll gain.

Tubmail Updates

I’ve pushed out some early upgrades to Tubmail, which should help if you have many messages in your inbox. It’s now paginated, and you get much more screen real estate to view the list of messages.

ItemBuildr Results

We’ve published a few ItemBuildr items already. You should check out the ItemBuildr section of the site and the store to see the awesome stuff our users have come up with.

What’s next?

Over the next little while I’ll be putting out many little enhancements to existing parts of the site such as Tubmail and Flamebate. If you’ve been part of the community for a while I’m sure you’ll be glad to have some of the new tools we plan to build.

We’re starting to work out a schedule for Episode 3 development, too. It’s a long way away, but we’re getting ready to get the ball rolling on that one too.

scullyangel joins the moderator team!

Today we’ve added scullyangel to our moderator team.

I think having a woman on our team will ensure that Flamebate remains the most intelligent and respectful forum on the Internet for many years to come.

TUBSWEETIE is our newest moderator!

Yesterday, we decided to promote TUBSWEETIE to be a new moderator for Forumwarz.

With Episode 2 coming up soon we figured we could use all the help we could get.

There’s a thread here if you want to say congratulations!

Polling in Flamebate

It’s something that other forums have had forever but we never did: polling!

Anyone can attach a poll to any thread they make. You can have up to 10 choices for now which I think should be enough for most polls.

It’s not very pretty, but the base is there for future upgrades. I’ll probably throw in some nice looking bar or pie charts.

If you want to try it out, check out the How much would you pay for Episode 2? thread.

Embedded IDC

Ever since we launched INCIT, our chat room (IDC) has been a little dead. Another reason for the lack of activity is that the only link to open IDC was quite buried in Flamebate.

As an attempt to address these problems, and introduce more people to chat in the process, I have embedded IDC on every page on Flamebate. If you go to flamebate now you will see it at the bottom.

You can chat while you read and respond to threads, and since Flamebate gets a lot more traffic than the IDC page did, you will see a lot more new faces.

Of course, if you don’t like the new interface, click the Hide IDC link in the dark blue area. The chat will go away and you can resume browsing without everyone else bothering you.

Note that while it is hidden, it won’t be contacting the server and nobody will see you in chat, it will be as if it was never there. If you want to bring it back, click Show IDC.

Enjoy, and feel free to post your feedback!
